What an excellent day.
Bigbury was packed with families out walking off the New Year hangovers so
it was a case of fight through the crowds to get my kit on the beach. NW
winds are cross off from the right with wind shadows created by the cliffs
but sailing close to the sand spit to Burgh Island creates a funneling
effect for a few hundred metres.
There were a few out already on 5.8s but I rigged a 5.4 in the hope that
the wind would pick up. Near to the spit it was a case of flat water
blasting and after warming up with a few heli-tacks and gybes I had a few
unsuccessful attempts at push tacks.
I decided to risk going down wind to the waves for some front side
waveriding, starboard tack being my weak tack for down the line. It paid
off with a couple of bottom turns per wave whilst trying not to piss the
surfers off. Then followed the long slog out with no wind for more of the
same.
I reckon I gained more today than I have since I moved to this area in
terms of front side riding, it doesn't get much better.
